Trouble In Egypt

The first new song here in a while. I don't even know if this will still be relevant by the time you hear it but I had to release it anyway. Like the rest of us around the world I've been watching the events in Egypt on the news. The people are calling for the end of a dictatorship and the birth of a new age of democracy.

I'm no expert on the situation in any way, and I certainly can't claim to understand how it is on the ground, let's get that straight. The spectre of damage to the Middle East peace process and a new restrictive Islamic state are constantly brought up on TV. Looking at the faces of the people and hearing their voices though, I remain optimistic that this can be a truly bright and fairer future for such a historic country.

This song is released under Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 license and I'm including words and chords below (in the comments). If you want to remix it, make a video, write new verses or do your own version then go for it. All I ask is that you share those changes with the rest of us in the same way. This was recorded with 1 mic, 1 guitar and done live. No gimmicks.

Please share this with friends, use social networks etc. I'm just throwing it out there really :)

DOWNLOAD THE SONG: It's also available in Ogg or FLAC if you prefer: OGG / FLAC

Lastly and most importantly, I hope you enjoy the tune.

Dan

Lyrics & chords:

G / Am / C / G

There's trouble down in Egypt, people on the streets,
Blood runs down the pavement, in the name of the regime.
You know they'll take a mile, if you give them just an inch,
We're all in this together, and there can be no retreat.

(chorus)

G / C

So fight on, fight on,

So fight on, fight on,

C / D / G

Until freedom is won.

(2nd verse chords, same as 1st)

All they talk about on telly, is the rising price of oil,
Holidays in tatters, and day to day football.
Meanwhile back in Cairo, the people face down tanks,
Shot at by policemen, who claim to be their friends.

Lovely job, Dan. Can you add a verse or create a new ditty about the impending Census?

If you'd like to contribute a verse go for it, the song is copyleft licensed for that reason ;)

I'd *love* this if you uploaded the stems to ccmixter.org :D

There aren't any stems I'm afraid. I recorded this live with one microphone. There's no mixing involved or any tricks. It's all one take with one mic in the room. Sorry.

If I do make a version with instruments on separate tracks I'll happily share any source materials with everyone. There just isn't any audio beyond this one stereo track at the moment.

Dan,

proud to know you. Will let the people in Egypt know. As we all should. We'll meet at FOSDEM anyway. So looking forward to that.

Jan

Thanks! Will see you at FOSDEM for sure. Maybe I can borrow a guitar and do a version here hehe :)

Fine job mate, nothing gets a message across better than a song.

Keep up the good work :)

 Thanks mate :)

Awesome job mate! It's amazing what the people in Egypt are doing. Their non violent attitude certainly contradicts all stereotypes about the middle east and the arab world in general.
